Christian athletic apparel remains an interesting topic today as Christians seek to live out their faith but also look good and feel good. Let’s first take a look at some Bible verses about clothing to create some framework for this discussion:

  • 1 Timothy 2: 9-10 “Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.”

  • 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

There are not many Bible verses that speak specifically of clothing, and even those that do are not necessarily applicable to today’s believers. However, we know from the general principles of the Bible that we ought not to dress in a way that doesn’t glorify God or may be a stumbling block to someone else.

So, when it comes to Christian athletic apparel, men and women should consider that their body belongs to God and that they are the Lord’s representatives on earth. So, they should ask, “how can I dress in a way that draws people closer to God?” For example, if you know you may have an opportunity to talk to someone about Christ at the gym, you don’t want to ruin your ministry beforehand by dressing in a way that may cause them not to trust you or respect you. If a man or woman is dressing in a scandalous way, what does that say about their commitment to the Lord?

Most men are constantly tempted to sin sexually, being very visually driven. Therefore, Christian woman would be kind and wise to dress in a way that doesn’t cause their brother to stumble. If a woman is wearing tight pants and tops that show off her breasts, that probably isn’t the most Biblical route to take.

At the same time, we don’t want Christians to become legalistic and feel burdened by rules or restrictions. Ultimately, God wants us to feel free but also live in a holy way. You can find workout clothes that honor God but are also fun, fashionable, and functional. At PureBold, we’ve tried to design Christian Athletic apparel that meets those needs. Our sweatpants, for example, are relatively loose fitting but still attractive and fashionable. Our tops form fit to your body but hopefully not in a sexually promiscuous way.

Also, make sure to consider fabrics. Shirt, pant, and shorts fabrics make a big difference in athletic activities where you may sweat. Most people prefer 100% polyester or a polyester blend because the fabric does not retain moisture like cotton. However, other people still prefer cotton for its breathability. The PureBold apparel we recommend for athletic activity are a blend between premium combed cotton and polyester.

When it comes to “bottoms”, the two basic categories are obviously shorts and pants. Depending on what activities you will be performing, shorts may be a necessity. However, for weight lifting and general fitness or even just running errands, at PureBold we prefer pants. Pants and particularly sweatpants are more comfortable and better looking.

If you’re working out and doing exercises like squats or leg presses, you don’t have to worry about your shorts moving around, etc. Pants offer more coverage and comfort overall in our experience. Of course, if you’re doing heavy cardio exercises like running, you may prefer shorts by necessity. We offer these premium sweatpants if you’re in the market:
