  • Research Assistant

Voytek Cognitive and Neural Dynamics Lab

    April 2018 – June 2019(1 year 2 months)University of California, San Diego

“The Voytek Lab studies the role neural oscillations and neural noise play in cognition, aging, and disease by using large scale data-mining, data science approaches, and machine-learning techniques.” ● Consolidated and developed Voytek Tutorials on digital signal processing and neural related analysis topics including electrophysiological time-series, filtering, and event-related potential ● Performed electrophysiological analysis with MD-PhD student on cortical organoids using lab created software More information about Voytek Lab can be found at:

  • Research Assistant

Muotri Lab at Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine

    April 2018 – June 2019(1 year 2 months)University of California, San Diego

“The Muotri Lab uses stem cells and several molecular tools to investigate fundamental mechanisms of brain development and mental disorders, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder” ● Collaborated with MD-PhD student on culturing induced pluripotent stem cells, neurons, and cortical organoids ● Assisted with experiments related to these cells (Western Blots, Immunohistochemistry, etc.) ● Trained and supervised three researchers on the cell culturing process by administrating lab protocols and demonstrating necessary techniques such as passaging, cell counting, media making, freezing, thawing, etc. More information about Muotri Lab can be found at:

Tutored Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Introductory programming, Basic data structures Administered tests/quizzes/exams during make-up dates ensuring academic integrity policies were followed

  • Stock Sector Market Prediction (Python, Jupyter)

    ● Cleaned and sorted data detailing the price in order to perform analysis using a Pandas dataframe ● Predicted what sector a stock is in using sklearn’s KNN and SVM. ● Optimized by running K-folds cross validations yielding a 39% accuracy rate over an 11% random prediction rate

    Team Members (1):
    • Michael Tran
  • Validation of an Empirical Comparison of Supervised Learning Algorithms (Python, Jupyter)

    ● Investigated three classifiers (SVM, LOGREG, KNN) on three datasets (IRIS, MNIST, ADULT) from the UCI repository in order to examine the strengths & weaknesses of each classifier on the given data set ● Achieved upwards of 85% accuracy on IRIS, 99% on MNIST, & 79% on the ADULT dataset

    Team Members (1):
    • Michael Tran
  • StackOverflow Question Analysis (Python, Jupyter)

    ● Analyzed 1,364,944 questions from two Kaggle datasets of StackOverflow coding questions after cleaning in order to find the most common questions beginners have using TF-IDF & BoW ● Applied Pandas tools to remove overlapping data from the two sets as well as extract questions from the dataframe

    Team Members (1):
    • Michael Tran
  • Munchy (HTML, CSS, Javascript)

    ● Designed a web-application that allowed users to share recipes in the form of Instagram-inspired posts along with a calendar which tracked meals, cost, calories. ● Developed skills in rapid prototyping, evaluated multiple interface alternatives, conducted fieldwork to design ideas, made paper prototypes and low-fidelity interactive mock-ups. ● Applied principles of visual design, perception and cognition to design process

    Team Members (1):
    • Michael Tran
  • Six Degrees of Separation (C++)

    ● Programmed an application that allowed users to enter two actors/actresses which then returned a list with the shortest connection between said actors/actresses in terms of movies by year using BFS, DFS, and optimized using hashmaps

    Team Members (1):

  • imageCategorizer (React, Node.js, Keras, MySQL, Bootstrap)

    July 2019

    ● Full stack Node.js project allowing users to intelligently search photo albums by object/social event ● Phase 1: Auto-tag images based on objects found inside image using Google Vision API ● Phase 2: Auto-categorize images by social event based on identified objects using Keras
