Background

Summary

Senior hardware design engineer and architect in board-level design with computer engineering expertise. Developed more than 45 personal computers, servers, network products and mobile devices. During 13 years at Intel, designed and architected blade servers and embedded systems. Designed reference and validation boards for testing and demonstrating integrated circuits and new product designs. Designed high-performance blade servers at Curtiss-Wright. Designed smartphone baseband cards at Qualcomm. Extensive debug experience and validation testing. Three years of customer enabling experience as a hardware applications engineer helping Dell, HP, Lenovo and other computer manufacturers design their laptop computers, reviewing their schematics and layouts and testing and debugging their designs. Delivered more than 50 technical documents and presentations to internal support teams and computer manufacturers about how new technologies work, how to design them into their computer systems and validate them which helped Intel win and keep customer designs. Strong technical leadership, broad experience, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work well with customers, other engineers, and manufacturers to solve complex technical issues. Served as a lead engineer and mentor for other engineers. Software/firmware engineering background using C, C# and assembly language for X86 and other processors and microcontrollers. Specialties: • Computer engineering • Mobile computer design • Server design • Embedded system design • Proven board-level design expertise • Hardware applications engineering • Technical leadership and expertise • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills • Excellent customer support • Technical writing/training • Demonstrated problem solving ability • Strong debug skills • Robust analytical skills

Experience

  • Staff Engineer

    Qualcomm

    April 2012 – Present(7 years 6 months)Greater San Diego Area

    • Developed two baseband cards (smartphone motherboards) for testing and validating smartphone chipsets. Designs included the Snapdragon™ processor (ARM-based), power conversion, DDR3 memory, flash memory, LCD interface, HDMI interface, audio, dual cameras, GPS, and other smartphone features. • Developed automated test scripts and used them to measure RF performance of smartphones including spurious emissions, out of band blocking, and the impact of the phone’s transmit signal on other phone RF systems like GPS and wi-fi. Wrote software utilities in C and C# to analyze massive amounts of data and quickly generate summary reports with details of each failure to enable rapid debugging.

  • Lead Hardware Engineer

    Curtiss Wright Controls

    November 2010 – March 2012(1 year 4 months)Greater San Diego Area

    – Led the hardware design of Curtiss Wright San Diego’s most complex single-board computer ever developed, an Intel processor-based OpenVPX board with DDR3 memory, PCI Express (PCIe) Gen 2, Serial Rapid I/O (SRIO) Gen 2, Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet (LAN), PMC and XMC card slots, multiple graphics interfaces, SATA, integrated solid-state drives, digital audio, and USB including schematic capture and board layout – Led hands-on bring-up and debug of 15 boards in a lab environment

  • • Chaired cross-functional Engineering and Marketing teams to enable adoption, design-in, and debug of emerging technologies for laptop computers by major computer manufacturers worldwide • Provided in-depth, technical support and hands-on validation and debug to major computer OEMs • Authored technical documents and presentations to train customer support teams and computer OEMs on how new laptop computer technologies work, how to design them into products, and how to debug and validate them • Architected, designed, debugged, and validated high-reliability server blades • Oversaw hardware design team doing product development and debug in Malaysia • Board-level design engineer, led and mentored a team of hardware engineers developing print servers, network storage, and network applicances (embedded systems)

    Recommendations (1)
  • • Designed and validated embedded computer systems for multimedia projectors based on liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and digital light processing • Designed a stand-alone media player from concept to production, including validation at the circuit board and system level • Designed a high-performance DRAM controller and system glue logic using programmable logic devices (EPLDs)

  • • Led the hardware design of two of IBM’s first laptop computers that helped pave the way for IBM’s entry into the mobile computer marketplace and gave Western Digital a key design win in their PC chipset business • Designed low-power notebook and power-managed desktop motherboards, silicon validation platforms, reference designs, and custom products for major computer OEMs • Managed portions of computer development and validation while mentoring and leading other engineers and technicians to successful product launches • Provided technical customer support to major computer OEMs helping to design, debug, and validate their products • Developed software test tools and utilities in C and assembly language to reduce design, debug, development and validation time • Developed firmware for embedded microcontrollers in hard disk drives to test and log errors during manufacturing burn-in
