  • 2014 Inaugural Interdisciplinary Case Study Competition – Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

    November 2013 – February 2014

Leveraging specialized knowledge through an intense collaborative effort among five scholars in health administration, nursing, organizational psychology, and law, our team progressed through two stages of a highly competitive case competition at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. In the preliminary round our team developed a comprehensive overview of the current state and issues surrounding a) the environment of high pediatric emergency department utilization and b) the antecedents of a pediatric emergency. In doing so we created a 10 minute presentation wherein each member presented key considerations on the topic. As a result of our preliminary round efforts our team was selected in the final group of 10 teams (33 teams competed in the preliminary round). In the final round our team developed a comprehensive solution to address the following case question: “How do you direct families with low acuity health concerns away from the Emergency Department to more appropriate sties of care such as an Urgent Care, Primary Care Physician or Clinic?” Our answer delved into the complications associated with ED over-usage as they pertained to organizational finance, operation and process capability, human resource policy, community education, and ethics. Our solution was presented by the team to a panel of business and medical professionals from areas including; – Human Resources – Business & Operations – Community Relations – General Pediatrics – Medical Research – Finance
