Background

Summary

I have interests in software/web development and education. In education I have worked with children of all grade levels in public and private schools, primarily teaching math, but also middle school science and computers. I have experience in full stack web development with the PHP, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML languages along with their associated platforms such as Node, React, Apache HTTPD, Nginx, Linux servers, etc. Although not as recent, I’ve programmed in C, C++, COBOL, and Assembly languages for desktop and mainframe application development.

Experience

  • Full Stack Web Engineer

    AoPS Incorporated

    June 2007 – Present(12 years 4 months)

AoPS Incorporated is composed of four primary components: book publishing, online classes, in-person classes at their academies, and a social network for students gifted in mathematics. This combines my love for education with my skills in software and web development. I primarily work developing applications using PHP, Node.JS, MySQL, Apache, Linux, JavaScript, CSS, and various tools and services such as Redis and S3.

  • Camp Staff

    Camp Quest

    June 2013 – Present(6 years 4 months)California

One week out of the year, or two weeks in the case of 2017, I take a brief vacation from my regular job to collaborate with many awesome people to run a secular, week-long summer wilderness camp focusing on things such as science, logic, and critical thinking. Of course, we do all the cool summer camp things as well, such as campfires, canoeing, team games, arts and crafts, archery, climbing wall, gaga ball, and all the other awesome things that go along with summer camps.

  • Teacher

I wore a number of hats at Ojai Valley School including middle school math teacher, head of International dorm, dorm parent for 4th – 6th graders, camp leader, and weekend assistant, to name just a few. This was one of those “toughest jobs you’ll ever love” jobs.

Volunteer Experience & Causes

  • Camp Staff

Typical camp staff for a science and reason based summer camp. I work both the summer with a group of wonderful staff, and throughout the year in developing the program.

  • Social and Service Project Director

    Various

    January 1993 – June 2007(14 years 5 months)Social Services

I use to do a lot of service and social outings for groups. Primarily church youth group stuff and school trips when I was a teacher. Loved doing this – so much fun. Wish I had a group to do it with now. I do occasionally still do some service projects (e.g., litter clean-up) but don’t have anything real consistent to attach myself to.

  • HOA President

    Condo Association

    November 2015 – November 2017(2 years)

Served as president of my condo’s HOA board. This position was very beneficial to me as it helped develop my interpersonal skills with a wide variety of personalities. I opted not to run again as I did not have enough time to devote sufficient resources into the board.

  • Volunteer

    The Club

    April 2015 – Present(4 years 6 months)Children

I do various volunteer work at are local recreation center and club. Most notably I’ve worked as inspector of elections for the board elections, halloween carnival assistant, and egg hunt assistant.
